Why we like this day

Banjul is small enough to see well in a morning, but it feels very different from the resort areas. We start at Arch 22, the 35-metre gateway into the city, then go on to Albert Market and the streets around it. The arch has a viewing gallery and a textile museum on the top floor, so it is a good first stop when you want to get your bearings.

Albert Market is where we slow down. There are fabric stalls, baskets, spices, carvings and everyday shopping, and it is more enjoyable when you are not worrying about the traffic or finding the car again. We are happy to add the National Museum or a food stop if you want a longer half day. Our job is to drive, explain the route and give you enough space to look around.

Our local tip: haggling is normal in the market, but keep it friendly. Start lower than the first price and keep smiling. Bring small cash notes rather than relying on a card, and tell us if there is something particular you want to find.
