Gambia Tours and Day Trips

Small groups or just you. Your driver is your guide, and every tour can be changed on the day if you want to stay longer somewhere.

Kunta Kinteh Island in the River Gambia
Full dayHistory and older children

Roots Tour to Kunta Kinteh Island and Juffureh

This is the full day we suggest when visitors want to understand a difficult part of Gambian history properly. We start from the coast, take the Banjul–Barra ferry, then travel up the north bank to Juffureh and Albreda. The island itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2003, and the day includes the river, the villages and the ruins rather than a rushed stop.

Sunrise over mangroves at Makasutu Culture Forest
Half dayNature, couples and photographers

Makasutu Culture Forest Day Trip

Makasutu is a welcome change from the busy coast. It is a mix of forest, savannah and mangrove around Mandina Creek near Brikama, covering about 10 km². We take you there for the canoe, the shade and the slower pace. The highlight is floating quietly through the mangroves in a dugout canoe, with a local guide explaining what is around you.

From £50 per person Driver and lunch

Arch 22 monument in Banjul
Half dayCulture, markets and first visits

Banjul City Tour

Banjul is small enough to see well in a morning, but it feels very different from the resort areas. We start at Arch 22, the 35-metre gateway into the city, then go on to Albert Market and the streets around it. The arch has a viewing gallery and a textile museum on the top floor, so it is a good first stop when you want to get your bearings.

From £30 per person Driver and local route planning

Crocodile at Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau
2–3 hoursFamilies and first easy outings

Kachikally Crocodile Pool and Bijilo Monkey Park Tour

This is an easy first outing when you are staying on the coast, especially with children. We go to Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau, then to Bijilo Forest Park on the way back. Kachikally is cared for by the Bojang family and has about 80 West African crocodiles, as well as a small museum. The keeper will tell you where to stand and which animal, if any, is safe to approach.

From £25 per person Driver and flexible local route

Fishing boat at Tanji on The Gambia’s coast
Half dayCoast, photography and relaxed days

Tanji Fishing Village and Southern Beaches Tour

This is the half day for people who want to see the coast working, then slow down somewhere quieter. We start at Tanji, where painted wooden boats, fish smoking and the afternoon catch make the beach busy and full of life. Tanji Bird Reserve was established in 1993, covers 612 hectares and includes the Bijol Islands. About 300 bird species have been recorded there.

From £35 per person Driver and flexible coastal route

Riverbank on the River Gambia near Janjanbureh
2 daysWildlife and adventurous travellers

2-Day Upriver Tour to Janjanbureh

The upriver tour is for visitors who want to see a different side of the country and have time for a night away from the coast. We drive east towards Janjanbureh, stopping at Wassu, where UNESCO protects 11 stone circles as part of the Senegambian Stone Circles. The overnight stay is included in the advertised price, and we plan the drive with breaks rather than pretending it is a short trip.

From £180 per person Driver and overnight stay

Guide on a shaded path at Abuko Nature Reserve
Half day or full dayBirdwatchers and patient walkers

Birdwatching Tours in The Gambia

The Gambia is a strong place for a quiet early start with binoculars, and we can help with transport and a route that makes sense for your stay. Abuko Nature Reserve is a good option from the coast: it was established in 1968, covers 107 hectares and has more than 270 recorded bird species. Tanji Bird Reserve is another useful stop, with about 300 recorded species across beach, lagoon and woodland.
