Why we like this day

Makasutu is a welcome change from the busy coast. It is a mix of forest, savannah and mangrove around Mandina Creek near Brikama, covering about 10 km². We take you there for the canoe, the shade and the slower pace. The highlight is floating quietly through the mangroves in a dugout canoe, with a local guide explaining what is around you.

After the creek, there is time to walk in the forest and see the cultural side of the place. Lunch is usually Gambian food, and the day can include drummers and dancers. The visit works well for couples, photographers and anyone who wants a gentler day outside the hotel area. We keep the pace easy and help you decide whether you prefer the shorter visit or a longer one with lunch.

Our local tip is simple: wear trainers rather than flip-flops and bring insect repellent for the creek. Morning is cooler and the birds are more active. Makasutu was founded in 1993, so we also treat it as a working cultural and nature place, not just a backdrop for photographs.
