Why we like this day

This is an easy first outing when you are staying on the coast, especially with children. We go to Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau, then to Bijilo Forest Park on the way back. Kachikally is cared for by the Bojang family and has about 80 West African crocodiles, as well as a small museum. The keeper will tell you where to stand and which animal, if any, is safe to approach.

Bijilo is a 51-hectare coastal forest beside Kololi. The paths are simple, the visit does not take all day and there are good chances to see green vervets and other monkeys. It is close enough to fit around lunch, a beach afternoon or your airport transfer day. We do not rush you, but we do keep the outing calm and practical for younger visitors.

Our local tip is to keep sunglasses, phones and food in your bag at Bijilo. Feeding the monkeys is discouraged because it makes them pushy. At Kachikally, only touch a crocodile when the keeper points one out, and stay back from the water’s edge.
