Roots tour: Kunta Kinteh Island
Ferry across from Banjul to Barra, then up to Juffureh, the village Alex Haley wrote about, and a boat out to the UNESCO-listed island.
Taxis, airport transfers & tours in The Gambia
Local drivers who grew up here, clear prices confirmed before you land, and day trips to the places we'd take our own family.
Banjul Airport transfers
Banjul International Airport (BJL) is in Yundum, about 25 to 40 minutes from the main hotel areas. When you come through arrivals, look for your name on a board. We'll carry your bags, there's cold water in the car, and the price is the one we already agreed.
Flights run late. We check yours before we leave, so a delay doesn't cost you anything extra. Going home, we'll pick you up from your hotel with plenty of time for check-in.

Tell us your arrival date, flight number, hotel or area, number of passengers and luggage. We’ll send your price before you travel in pounds, euros or Gambian dalasi.

Ferry across from Banjul to Barra, then up to Juffureh, the village Alex Haley wrote about, and a boat out to the UNESCO-listed island.

Paddle the mangrove creek in a dugout canoe, walk the forest with a local guide, then lunch with drummers and dancers.

Arch 22, the National Museum, the fabric stalls of Albert Market and a plate of domoda at a place we know.

Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau in the morning, then the friendly monkeys of Bijilo Forest Park on the way back.

Watch the boats come in at Tanji, then on to the quiet sand at Sanyang for grilled fish and a swim.

The long road east to the old river town, the UNESCO stone circles at Wassu, and a boat past the chimpanzee islands.
Our local guide
The ten places we drive visitors to most. Tap any of them for the full guide: how long to allow, how to get there and the tips we give our own guests.
1The UNESCO-listed island and the Roots village. Our most-booked full day.
2Dugout canoe through the mangroves near Brikama, then a forest walk and lunch.
3Bakau's sacred pool, with around 80 crocodiles you can stroke with the keeper.
4The country's first reserve, with more than 270 bird species and three kinds of monkey.
5Climb the 35-metre arch for the view, then get lost in the market.
6Painted boats, smokehouses and the catch coming in at sunset.
7The Monkey Park, right next to Kololi. Perfect with children.
8Chimpanzees and hippos from the boat, plus the Wassu stone circles.
9Empty golden sand and grilled fish on the quiet south coast.
10The biggest market in the country by day, restaurants and music by night.

Good to know
Message us on WhatsApp with your flight number, hotel or area, passenger number and luggage. We’ll send you a clear taxi price before you travel, including meet and greet and help with bags.
Yes. The green tourist taxis outside hotels are licensed and generally safe, and pre-booked drivers like ours are the easiest option. If you use a taxi off the street, always agree the price before you get in.
Green taxis are tourist taxis. They work from the hotels and the airport and charge set rates. Yellow taxis with a green stripe are town taxis, shared with locals, much cheaper, and run fixed routes. They're fine for confident travellers but not for airport runs with luggage.
November to May is the dry season, with sunshine nearly every day and temperatures around 30°C. That's also peak season for birdwatching. June to October is the rainy season: hotter, greener, quieter and cheaper.
Tipping isn't required, but it's always appreciated. Many visitors give around 10% on a tour if they've had a good day.
Yes. We can quote and accept Gambian dalasi, pounds or euros in cash, and bank transfer for tour deposits. You pay for airport transfers on the day.
"Bumster" is the local word for the young men on the beaches who offer to be your guide or friend. Most are harmless and just looking for work. A polite but firm "no thank you" works. Travelling with a booked guide means you'll be left alone.
Direct flights from the UK take around six hours. The Gambia is on GMT all year, so there's no time difference with the UK in winter and only one hour in summer. No jet lag either way.
